Inspired by her superstar aunty, young player takes her game to the next level
When she was young, Katahra Boyle-Raniga would watch her older brother on the rugby field and think she’d like to give that a go herself. It didn’t take her long - at age 9 she signed up to play for the Coogee Seahorses, where the St Michael's Catholic Primary School Daceyville student has been playing for the last two years.
Driven by Australian women’s rugby, inspired by her Aunty
Katahra’s aunty, Wallaroos and Waratahs Women’s star Sera Naiqama is a huge inspiration for her, as well as being her favourite player. Katahra loves watching her aunty take the field for Australia and the Waratahs, and says every time she watches her play she learns new skills that she can use in her own games.
The positive direction that women’s rugby in Australia is heading is also a huge source of drive for Katahra. Playing as part of a mixed team, she feels like she’s not just a girl playing rugby with the boys but part of the team. She loves when her teammates back her up on the field, and says she gets treated like an equal. This sense of camaraderie gives her motivation to play at her best.
On the field, one of Katahra’s favourite things to do is yell at the boys to spread out when they are on defence. When her team has the ball she loves sprinting down the wing to the tryline. Katahra’s talent and hard work is starting to be recognised, and last year she was one of two girls to make the Randwick Rugby U11 Rep team.
Being selected for the Edstart Rugby Scholarship Program
Katahra feels honoured to be among the many talented players selected for the Edstart Rugby Scholarship Program, which has supported junior players like her in developing their skills and fostering their passion for the game.
When Katahra heard the news that she had been selected for the scholarship, she was excited and happy to be part of it. It's provided her with extra motivation to level up her game and learn new skills to use on the field. Looking to the future she wants to defend her team’s current titles and then work her way up to playing for the Waratahs and hopefully one day Australia.
