Building a bright future for women’s rugby one try at a time
Between enduring friendships, skill development, and the joys of success, competitive sports can be incredibly rewarding. And for 11-year old Indee Carr, her experience with rugby has been a continuous bounty.
Picking up a footy ball from an early age, Indee’s success across different codes has jump-started a passion for the sport and her personal growth. Though it is not only the satisfaction of individual achievement that the young athlete has gained in her time.
With plans to take rugby to greater heights, Indee is striving to be a leader in women’s rugby, inspiring other young girls to live their sporting dreams.
Born to play rugby
Since hitting the pitch at the age of four, Indee’s time across different codes has been nothing short of impressive.
In the past three years, she’s been a key contributor to her undefeated League team, receiving the award for the best “back” player in 2021 all while playing State Oztag on the side.
Since being offered the opportunity to play Union she’s taken the transition in stride, building new skills and feeding her ambition with the Norwest Bulls Junior Rugby Union Club.
A passion built out of comradery and personal growth
Despite Indee’s individual success across codes, these achievements are secondary to the sense of belonging Indee’s gained through her rugby team.
Sharing in the joys of winning, lessons of defeat, and support of her teammates, has fostered her deep love of the game.
“being a member of my Union team there was nothing but encouragement from everyone.. …transitioning from league to Union was tricky but learning Union has been amazing.” - Indee Carr
Perhaps more important, these opportunities for skill development and fitness have also led to a real sense of self-determination, love for learning, and leadership.
“I love to play sport I love to learn and love to push myself to be not only a better player but a better person..” - Indee Carr
Moving towards higher goals and inspiring young women in Rugby
With the help of Edstart’s Rugby Scholarship program, Indee’s greater ambitions lie in becoming not just a player at the highest level, but a representative for women in the sport. Moving through the pathways toward being a top-form athlete, Indee hopes to show other young girls that their dreams in Rugby or otherwise are possible.
The number of females in Aussie Rugby has more than doubled over the previous five years and the success of Australia’s women's team is a perfect demonstration of this trend.
Shifting the narrative of a once male-dominated sport, is in no small part due to inspiring young girls like Indee. We’re proud to support young athletes like Indee through the Edstart Rugby Scholarship Program who are continuing to grow the presence of women’s rugby.
