Pint-sized star chasing his Waratahs dream with Edstart’s Rugby Scholarship
Starting as a bashful kid and coming into his own as a competitor and leader, rugby has given Freddie Finlayson the opportunity to come out of his shell and aspire toward his dreams.
The St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill student has learned life-long lessons through the instruction of his coaches, the support of his teammates, and the pressure of competition. Now with the help of the Edstart Rugby Scholarship Award, Freddie is ready to take his success with the Easts Junior Beasties to the next stage.
Appreciating rugby from all angles
Freddie’s love of rugby started early on, watching the Waratahs live together with his mum and dad. And his passion as a fan has carried through in his approach to the game.
From the small rituals of putting his boots on in the car and arriving early to warm up, to running hard and embracing the physicality of the game, Freddie has enjoyed the full package of rugby.
But what’s been the most valuable is the growth he has shown off the field.
From shyness to Shute Shield aspirations
Beginning as someone too shy to even speak, playing rugby over the last nine years has helped build his confidence and brought him out of his shell.
Learning the ‘8 Pillars’ of success from his club coach and mentor, Freddie and his teammates have been trained in the importance of discipline, respect, empathy, humility, and clear communication.
However, it is the lesson of resilience that has come to be most appreciated by Freddie which has allowed him to handle the disappointment of losing, have confidence in uncomfortable situations, and move past disruptions with positivity.
On the pathway to his Waratahs dream
Freddie has been playing rugby for the better part of his life, and with his incredible focus and motivation, he hopes to continue this at the professional level.
Being a part of Edstart’s Rugby Scholarship Program, Freddie has been lucky enough to buy new boots and enjoy his very own ball signed by the “Tahs” which he’s using to further develop his skills.
As a next step, Freddie has his sights on playing first-grade rugby with Easts Rugby. Though bigger dreams remain fixed on playing for the Waratahs and representing Australia on the world stage with the Wallabies.
Showing the power of rugby to inspire and develop young people, Edstart is happily supporting Freddie’s journey.
