Single parenting - does it really get easier?

Life as a single parent can be like one of a young child, suddenly thrown into the deep end trying to learn to swim, manage tantrums, and constantly working through new challenges. It can be intensely frustrating and may bring about a frequent set of tears. So one can’t help but wonder, does it really get easier?

Single parenting with teenagers, takes on a whole new ballgame. It is fraught with complications, indifferences and constant obstacles. It is vital, however, to remember that you are not alone. There are numerous others in a similar boat to you, and if you don’t have any friends or family experiencing the same thing, then there are local community groups to join. Parenting is a big job, and there is no shame in admitting that sometimes you need a helping hand.

To help with the role of being a single parent, Edstart has put together a few tips to help keep you in your stride, and open the communication with your child or children:

  • Be positive every day. Before you go to bed each night, tell yourself one thing you love about being a parent.
  • Engage in your support network. Networking with like-minded individuals can provide you with a lot of help. For example, if you have an evening out, a friend or sibling can call your teenager to touch base.
  • Be kind. Forget about all the ‘shoulds’ and ‘could-haves,’ do whatever makes your child happy.
  • Set rules. Do not be afraid to make your behavourial expectations known in your household.
  • Talk to your child. As they get older, you are able to loosen the chain and give them greater flexibility. This is the same for you. You don’t have to be there all the time anymore, but just ensure they know their limitations.
  • Get to know their friends. As children get older and more mature, their influences come from more and more sources. Their circle of friends may expand greatly from primary school to high school, so take the time to get to know who they are hanging out with. If anything is concerning this enables you to keep an eye out.
  • Try to understand your differences. Being a single parent means at times you can lose your patience perhaps easier than if there is another parent helping. Teenage hormones can be frustrating. Just try to be mindful not to lose control and friction may make the distance worse. You have to try and stay positive.
